St Joseph's Church on Elm Grove has served the Catholic community of East Brighton since 1887. The church was built to meet the growing needs of Irish immigrants and local Catholic families who had settled in the area during the latter half of the nineteenth century.
The original building was a modest structure, but it grew over the decades as the parish flourished. A major restoration in the 1960s added the current stained-glass windows, which depict scenes from the life of St Joseph and the Holy Family. The church hall, added in 1974, became a centre for parish life and community events.
Today St Joseph's is part of the Brighton and Hove Catholic family of thirteen churches. It continues its tradition of welcome and missionary discipleship, with a particular focus on young adults, families, and those exploring the Catholic faith for the first time.
